Skin layers has been divided into 3 major layers - Epidermis, Dermis and Hypodermis. The skincare and cosmetics should ideally do not travel below first (outermost) skin layer i.e. Epidermis.
Epidermis: Outermost layer of the skin that you can touch
The top-most layer has 5 sublayers, made of different skin cells, fats that are responsible for skin renewal, skin color and acts as a protective barrier.
Dermis:
The middle layer has the natural moisturizing factors including Hyaluronic acid, collagen, elastin fibers that are responsible for the maintenance of skin structure and hydration.
Hypodermis: Innermost layer of the skin that is in touch with the veins
The bottom layer that cushions the muscles and bones, has tissues, protects nerves, blood vessels and regulates body temperature.
